The story of a husband who loses his wife to an affair and through his suffering discovers that it is very difficult to be poor. He discovers that Rome can be inhospitable as he seeks to work to pay for food and household expenses. He is ultimately reduced to living in a boarding house, and falls into a downward cycle that destroys him both materially and spiritually.
