Leopoldstadt is one of the districts of the Austrian capital. It got its official name from the Holy Roman Emperor, but it has always been popularly known as the "Matza Island", because a huge Jewish community has lived here since time immemorial.

Hermann Merz's family also comes from Leopoldstadt. But if his great-grandfather was just a fabric peddler, then Hermann Merz himself is a successful manufacturer, one of the richest people in Vienna, a regular at the opera and social salons accepted by high society. A few days before the start of the new 20th century, gathered his entire noisy, large family in a luxurious living room, Hermann Merz does not doubt for a second that his children and grandchildren will live in a kingdom of reason and beauty, scientific progress, philosophy and art...

In 1955, in this very same living room, Rose, Nathan and Leo meet – three “fragments” of a once huge family, the only ones who managed to survive the fire of the 20th century…
