Short Film Program: Into The Dark

Raikoke Island is so small that it is not easy to spot it among the Kuril Islands. But even a small island is capable of big surprises.

The documentary was filmed during the expeditions of the Kamchatka branch of the Pacific Institute of Geography FEB RAS and NPWC.

Battling subzero temperatures and forty-foot seas, a team of scientists embark on a perilous winter expedition into the darkest regions of the Arctic. Their mission: to understand how trace amounts of light may be radically altering the mysterious world of the polar night. What they discover has implications for the global climate and the future of the Arctic.

In the ield of tension between work and private retreat, the downfall of an administrative oficer is sketched who is no longer up to his changing environment and who inally succumbs to it through his own disappearance. 

As an administrative employee of a corporate group, the protagonist experiences always the same stations of his monotonous everyday life. Quite casually and at irst unnoticed by him, his surroundings begin to change and deform until one morning he inds an empty ofice and is confronted with the fact that this everyday life no longer exists. What remains is a social structure without a human face in a deserted architecture... a city minus people in its poetic and cruel beauty. 

Scientists in Germany and around the world are trying to get a grip on the problem of space debris, which is threatening everyday life as we know it today.
