Like in many of his previous works, Granilshchikov’s characters are young creatives, whose lives and careers develop to a backdrop of current political affairs.
«For me, it was not so much about writing a story for the film, but more about looking for a way of filming it,» Granilshchikov explains. «We were not actors but performers documenting our lives and occasionally inserting an invented situation.»
Filmed over two years in Saint Petersburg and Paris, The Last Song follows a deceptively confusing, but in fact linear timeline, which starts with a conservative turn in Russian society after the presidential election of 2012 and ends in the present day. «From the very beginning, I thought that even without a script, but with close attention to detail, we would be able to create something important—something that could develop into a shimmering story, almost a drama.»
